Storytime Programs - Fall II, 2016 - Week Two

Welcome to the second week of Fall II storytime programs.  In addition to our weekly storytimes, there are numerous special events happening so be sure to check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information.  We hope that you'll be joining us.   Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
Where Is Baby's Pumpkin by Katz Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Five Little Pumpkins by Scott Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Here's A Little Pumpkin
Here's a little pumpkin (make circle with thumb and forefinger)
Here's a bigger one too (make circle with hands)
Here's a great big pumpkin (make circle with arms)
Just for you!
I kept the little pumpkin (make circle with thumb and forefinger)
I kept the bigger one too (make circle with hands)
But I saved the biggest pumpkin just for you! (give baby a great big hug)

Acting out rhymes such as Here's A Little Pumpkin helps your child learn about size.  You can also develop baby's vocabulary about this concept by comparing the sizes of objects around the house.

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
Monkey And Me by Gravett Click here to find the book in the catalog.
The Cuddle Book by Van Genechten Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: The Animals At The Zoo
(Tune: The Wheels On The Bus)
The tigers at the zoo go roar roar roar
Roar roar roar, roar roar roar
The tigers at the zoo go roar roar roar
All day long!
The snakes at the zoo go hiss hiss hiss..
The monkeys at the zoo go ooh ooh aah aah...

Hearing and making animal sounds is a fun way to prepare your toddler for when he's ready to learn to read.  The ability to hear and play with the smaller sounds in language will be helpful when he is trying to sound out words. So, read, sing, and talk about animals!

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Who Hops? by Davis Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Move! by Jenkins & Page Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Bat
(Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star)
Twinkle, twinkle, little bat
How I wonder where you're at
Up above the world you fly
Eating bugs that flitter by
Twinkle, twinkle, little bat
How I wonder where you're at

Repeated exposure to books and songs with rhyming words, such as "bat" and "at", and "fly" and "by" in this week's action rhyme, help children become familiar with sound structures as well as letters. As they get a little bit older, they begin to recognize that certain letters frequently go together. Practice this skill at home when reading a familiar book or singing a favorite song together.  Pause and ask your child to fill in the blank (rhyming) word to finish the phrase.

1, 2, Go!  (For children 1-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Tickle Monster by Manceau Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Monsters Go Night-Night by Zenz Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Monster Monster, Turn Around
Monster monster, turn around
Monster, monster, touch the ground
Monster, monster, reach up high
Monster monster, touch the sky
Monster monster, touch your nose
Monster monster, grab your toes
Monster monster, touch your knees
Monster monster, sit down please

Active rhymes and songs are a great way to increase a child's vocabulary in a fun way!  The more words he hears, the larger his vocabulary will be.  The more words he knows, the easier it is to recognize words when he starts to read.  So, make sure every day is filled with words, words, and more words!

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
Not Quite Black And White by Ying Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Happy Halloween Witch's Cat! by Muncaster Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Shivery Shades of Halloween by Siddals Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Five Little Bats
Five little bats on a dark, dark night
Five little bats are quite a sight
Five little bats.  Are you keeping score?
One flies away and then there are four

Four little bats as happy as can be
One flies away and that leaves three

Three little bats swooping in towards you
One flies away and that leaves two

Two little bats having lots of fun
One flies away and that leaves one.

One little bat and we’re almost done!
He flies away and then there are none.

Read some of the silly words from this week's storytime with your preschooler!
Dreamy-gleamy, glowy-showy, shiny-tiny – Glint of yellow
Inky-slinky, hairy-scary, creepy-seepy – Blot of black
Rusty-crusty, goldy-moldy, flaring-glaring – Blaze of orange

Can you make up more silly words?

Family Jam (For families with young children)

Books
Parts by Arnold Click here to find the book in the catalog.
The Colors of Us by Katz Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Some family members look very alike, some look very different.  We are all unique though!  Play a fun guessing game together on this theme.  Have one person describe another family member - color of eyes, length of hair, size etc.  Everyone else guesses who it is.  Take turns describing and guessing. For more of a challenge, describe a relative who doesn't live with you!
