Storytime Programs - Fall II, 2016 - Week One

Welcome to the first week of Fall II storytime programs.  In addition to our weekly storytimes, there are numerous special events happening so be sure to check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information.  We hope that you'll be joining us.   Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
The Baby Book by Morris Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Show Me Happy by Allen Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Baby Tickles
Give baby a hug,
Give baby a squeeze,
Give baby a tickle on his knees!
Give baby a kiss,
Give baby a drum, (drum fingers on baby's knees)
Give baby a tickle on his tum!

Babies love to hear the sound of your voice!  Making sounds is the first way your child tries to imitate speech and builds beginning language skills.  So, talk, talk, talk to your baby!

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
Bubbles, Bubbles by Appelt Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Bathtime With Theo and Beau by Shyba Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Toothpaste Trouble
I can use the flannel to scrub, scrub, scrub.
I can use the soap,
But when I use the toothpaste I give up all hope.
I get toothpaste on my cheek,
Toothpaste on my nose, toothpaste on my ear,
Toothpaste on my hair,
Toothpaste on my tummy, toothpaste on my knee,
And in lots of other places,
That toothpaste shouldn't be!

Toddlers love bathtime!  There are many ways to make it a learning experience too.  While your little one is in the tub, sing the alphabet, nursery rhymes, or other songs together.  Read vinyl books.  Name body parts as you help your toddler wash himself.  Count all the toys in the tub.  The possibilities are endless when you have a captive toddler!

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Little Big by Bentley Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Abigail by Rayner Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Giraffe
I'm a tall giraffe stretching way up high (reach arms up)
A big, tall giraffe, I almost touch the sky (stand on tiptoes)
I eat the leaves from the tallest trees (pretend to eat)
And when I run, I move with ease (pretend to run)
I'm a big, tall giraffe stretching way up high (reach arms up)
Way...up...high! (stand on tiptoes)

The books read in storytime this week are just two of the fabulous books about giraffes that Gail Borden Public Library owns.  We also have giraffe puzzles and puppets.  Check some out!

1, 2, Go!  (For children 1-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Monsters Love Colors by Austin Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Walter's Wonderful Web by Hopgood Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Flannel Rhyme: Shapes
I can see a circle shape, circle shape, circle shape,
I can see a circle shape, how about you?
(square, triangle, rectangle, diamond)

This rhyme was presented on the flannel board during storytime but is easily repeated at home to further your child's knowledge of shapes.  Cut out some simple paper shapes to show your child while singing the rhyme.  Then go on a shape hunt in your house!

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
Aberdeen by Previn Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Llama, Llama Llama Red Pajama by Dewdney Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Ten Red Apples by Miller Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Apple Pie
One an apple
Two an apple (stack fists one over other as you count up)
Three an apple
Four!
Five an apple
Six an apple
Seven an apple
More!
Put them all together and stack them up so high!
Smash them all together and make an apple pie!

Apples are everywhere at this time of year!  Have a conversation about apples with your preschooler.  Has he seen them in an orchard, at the store, or in your house?  How do they grow?  What colors and shape are they?  Does he like to eat them in slices, in applesauce, in pies....?

Family Jam (For families with young children)

Books
If I Had a Robot by Yaccarino Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Robot Burp Head Smartypants! by Simon Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Little Robots by Brownlow Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Families enjoyed dancing together and pretending to be robots while they watched The Robot Song video by Just Dance Kids 2.   If you would like to enjoy it again, click on the following YouTube link.

Of course our robot themed storytime is no coincidence!  If you haven't already done so, stop in the Main Library to experience our Robot Zoo exhibit before it leaves us mid-December.
