Early Literacy Fun!

Here are five simple, seasonal activities to do with your child to help him get ready to read.


  1. Talk about holiday or seasonal traditions in your family.  What is your child's favorite tradition and why? 
  2. Sing holiday songs together.
  3. Read a holiday or winter book with your child.  Then, ask him to tell you what happens in the book.
  4. Help your child write a card or letter, or draw a picture, for a family member or friend.  
  5. Play a fun memory game together!  Select five seasonal objects (tree ornament, mitten, cookie cutter, etc.) and place them on the floor.  Have your child close his eyes while you remove one of the objects and hide it behind your back.  Then, ask him to open his eyes and guess which one is missing.  Take turns hiding and guessing.

Repeat this rhyme at home with your little one.  Demonstrate jumping, tip-toeing, knee tapping, and all the other actions for your child.  Is he able to try any of these actions? Action rhymes are just one of the ways you can help your child develop his large motor skills.

Painting is a great summertime activity because you can do it outdoors.  It's a fun way to work on color recognition and fine motor skills.  Use paints and brushes, or try something different such as finger painting with pudding, or colored ice painting. This week we enjoyed parachute play in Tiny Tales.  We talked about the colors of the parachute, felt the wind as we waved it up and down, played peekaboo under it, and more!  Enjoy this activity at home using a tablecloth or other piece of light fabric.  Use words like "up" and "down", wave it "fast" and "slow".  Can you play peekaboo with it too?

After we read stories and sang rhymes about flying into space, the parents and babies listened, bounced and counted along to Zoom, Zoom, Zoom on the Oh Baby!  CD.  If you'd like to watch a YouTube version of this song, click on the following video.



Babies love singing and dancing with you!  Did you know that singing exposes your baby to rhythm, language, and communication?  By adding dancing to the mix, you are incorporating balance and coordination too.  Learning is so much fun!

The preschoolers enjoyed the repetition in this song and the anticipation of "Blast Off"!  Repetition is a powerful way to master a skill, whether it be counting down numbers in this song or by doing another activity.  As often as possible, ask your child to sort socks by color when you do laundry, write the letters in his name, button up his own clothing, etc.  Repeat, repeat, repeat!

We read and sang about summer this week - sun and rain, and many things you associate with the season.  When you are outside with your little one be sure to point out some of the things you see, hear, touch, and smell.  Do you see any animals, insects, plants?  Use descriptive words and  phrases.

Toddlers are full of energy and there's no better way to use it than by running and jumping around.  Visit your local park and encourage your toddler to run around. Help him by making up games you can play together. For example, you could play at being different animals. See if your toddler can run like a dog, pounce like a cat, or slither like a snake.

Like most preschoolers, your child probably already loves music and has favorite songs.  This may have happened with little encouragement from you beyond simply playing music on long car trips. Kids who grow up hearing music, singing songs, and moving to the beat are enjoying what experts call "a rich sensory environment."  They are exposed to a wide variety of  sounds.  Research shows that kids who are actively involved in music (who play it or sing it regularly): 

- do better in reading and math when they start school
- are better able to focus and control their bodies
- play better with others and have higher self-esteem

In order to be ready to write, children need to have acquired the strength and dexterity to handle, and control, small objects with their fingers and hands.  Practicing rhymes like this one actively encourage this development.

Just like in 1, 2, 3, Go! this week, this is another counting rhyme that will improve your preschooler's fine motor skills.  Find other opportunities too when you are with your preschooler to further strengthen these muscles and prepare him for writing - encourage coloring, cutting with scissors, picking up small items, rotating pieces in a puzzle.....





1000 Books Before Kindergarten is a reading incentive program for children from birth to kindergarten.  Enjoying books with your baby, toddler or preschooler is the best way to get them ready to read on their own!  

A home life that includes positive experiences with reading and the library ensures positive attitudes for reading once in school.

Beginning April 18th, the Gail Borden Public Library is encouraging families to join this simple program.

Next week at storytime, your child will receive the directions for the 1000 Books Before Kindergarten program and a bird page to record the first 100 books you read together.  Remember to include stories that your child hears at library storytimes - any and all books and stories count!

Storytime Programs - Week 8, Winter 2015

Welcome to the eighth and final week of our winter storytime programs.  We hope you and your child have enjoyed spending time with us.  We are all looking forward to spring and some better weather! This week Story Mix is all about ovals, like eggs and ponds!  In the book Jo MacDonald Saw A Pond, we sing the Old MacDonald song but with different words to fit the story.  "Jo MacDonald saw a pond, E-I-E-I-O, And in that pond she saw some ducks, E-I-E-I-O.  With a quack-quack here and a quack-quack there..."  Make up your own verses using this familiar song!  Did you know singing and rhyming increases children's awareness to sounds in words.  This helps prepare children to decode written language.

Show your toddler snow, whether you are outside and able to touch it or inside your warm home and looking at it through the window.  Talk to your child about snow.  Is it cold or hot?  What color is it? Does it make a noise when you step on it with your boots?  What can you do in the snow?

Acting out rhymes helps your baby learn about size and shape.  You can also develop your baby's vocabulary about these concepts by comparing the sizes and shapes of objects around the house.

Bouncing and clapping rhymes are an effective way of listening to, and feeling, the rhythm of language.  Not only is the movement fun, but it introduces toddlers to the idea of rhythm--a fundamental component of language and reading.  Can you think of any other rhymes to bounce along to?  How about Humpty Dumpty or Jack and Jill Went Up The Hill?  Both of these nursery rhymes also include the action of "falling down" - sure to cause a giggle or two from your toddler!

Does your toddler wear a snow suit when he goes outside?  A scarf and hat?  Gloves or mittens?  Next time you get ready to go somewhere, talk about what he must wear.  What color is his hat?  How many mittens must he wear?  Does his coat have a zipper or buttons?  The opportunities to have a conversation with your toddler during the day are endless!

Fingerplays help children develop and improve their fine motor coordination.  Toddlers learn how to manipulate their fingers independently of each other and strengthen the muscles in both hands. Storytime Programs - Week Three, Winter 2015

Welcome to the third week of our winter storytime programs.  We hope you and your little ones are enjoying being part of the fun!  Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

The babies know all about bubbles since we are using the bubble machine each week during this session.  Their faces are a delight to see!  This is an activity that many families are sure to continue at home.

Sharing rhymes and songs that tell stories will help your toddler develop sequencing skills which is the ability to put the events of a story in the order in which they occur. This is important because logical order of thinking is fundamental to reading.

We are continuing our shape theme with triangles this week.  Host a triangle picnic.  Cut paper plates in triangles and sit on a blanket folded into a triangle.  Eat triangular-shaped foods, such as pizza or triangle sandwiches.  What fun!  Talk about other foods that are triangular.  Did you know that talking is how children learn new vocabulary?
