Storytime Programs - Fall I, 2016 - Week Six

Welcome to the final week of Fall I storytime programs.  What a lot of fun we have had!  In addition to our weekly storytimes, there are numerous special events happening so be sure to check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information.  Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
Naptime With Theo & Beau by Shyba Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Happy Dog Sad Dog by Lloyd Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Puppet Rhyme: The Dog Says Woof Woof
The dog says woof woof,
The kitty says meow meow,
The cow says moo moo,
The sheep says baa baa,
And the baby says I love you!

Make up silly rhymes and encourage your baby to imitate the words and sounds he hears.  This helps your child develop an awareness and understanding of the smaller parts of words.

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
A Lullaby For Little One by Casey Click on the link to find the book in the catalog.
Whose Eyes Are These? by Belmont Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Bedtime For Bunnies
(Count on toes or fingers)
"It's time for all bunnies to go to bed," Mother bunny said.
"I will count them up to see,
If all of my bunnies came back to me.
One little bunny, two little bunnies,
Three little bunnies dear,
Four little bunnies, five little bunnies,
Yes, they are all here.
You are the dearest little bunnies alive,
One, two, three, four, five."

Repeat this rhyme at home and practice counting with your little one.  Count toes, fingers, toys in a line - you can count all kinds of things.  Practice, practice, practice!

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Cornelius P. Mud, Are You Ready For Bed? by Saltzberg Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Small Bunny's Blue Blanket by Feeney Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Here Is Baby
Here is a baby, (index finger)
Ready for a nap,
Lay her down in her mother's lap. (place finger in palm of hand)
Cover her up so she won't peek, (curl finger around index finger)
Rock her till she's fast asleep (rock)

If you haven't done so already, establish a routine of reading with your child before bedtime.  Reading to children is beneficial to their brain development, encourages speech and language acquisition and teaches literacy skills in an enjoyable way.  What better way to settle down for a good night's sleep than snuggling with a loved one and a good book!

1, 2, 3, Go!  (For children 1-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
What In The World: Numbers in Nature by Day Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Shape By Shape by MacDonald Click here to find the book in the catalog.

Action Rhyme: Green says GO!
Green says, "Go!" (march quickly)
Go!  Go!  Go!
Yellow says, "Slow!" (march slowly)
Slow...Slow...Slow,
And red says, "Stop!" (stop and freeze)
Go!  Go!  Go! (march fast)
Slow...Slow...Slow (march slowly)
and STOP! (stop)

This is a fun game to repeat with your toddler.  As your child's understanding of the words "Go", "Slow" and "Stop" improves, hesitate before saying these words and encourage your child to say them with you.  When your child becomes even more confident in this skill, replace the color words with green, yellow, and red objects.  Then, ask your child what action goes with each color.

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
Emma's Pet by McPhail Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Some Pets by DiTerlizzi Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Giant Pop-Out Pets by Chronicle Books

Action Rhyme: Hop Like Your Bunny
Hop, hop, hop like your bunny,
Run, run, run like your dog,
Walk, walk, walk like your cat,
Jump, jump, jump like your frog,
Swim, swim, swim like your fish,
Fly, fly, fly like your bird,
Sit right down and don't say a word.

Do you have a family pet?  If yes, talk with your child about it.  What does it look like?  What does it like to do and eat?  Where does it sleep?  If you don't have a family pet, what kind of pet does your child think would be fun?

Family Jam (For families with young children)

Books
Giant Pop Out Ocean by Chronicle Books
Octavia And Her Purple Ink Cloud by German Click here to find the book in the catalog.
Octopus's Garden by Starr Click here to find the book in the catalog.

YouTube Video: Five Little Octopi
Click on the image below if you'd like to watch this fun counting video again!

Octopus starts with the letter "O".  Does your child know what sound this letter makes?  Go on a letter "O" search in your house and find other things that start with the same sound!  Who can find the most?

We hope you enjoyed this session of storytimes and will be joining us for Fall II storytimes which begin the week of October 17!

Remember, although there will be no scheduled storytimes next week, we will be hosting Playful Learning Centers for you and your preschooler to enjoy together in the Story Rooms.  Times will be offered Monday through Thursday.  For more information please check our Events Calendar by clicking on the link at the beginning of this post.
