Storytime Programs - Winter, 2016 - Week Five

Check out Gail's Farm - Our Latest Dramatic Play Center

Welcome to the fifth week of winter storytime programs.  In addition to our weekly storytimes, there are numerous special events happening so be sure to check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information.  We hope that you'll be joining us.   Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books

Zoom! Things That Go - Sassy
That's Not My Train - Watt

Action Rhyme: Smooth Road

Smooth road, smooth road, smooth road, (bounce baby gently on knee)
Bumpy road, bumpy road, bumpy road, (bump baby on knee)
Rough road, rough road, rough road, (jostle baby on knee)
Hole! (gently drop baby through knees)

Babies love bouncing rhymes.  Face your little one towards you so that you can see the enjoyment as well as hear the giggles!  For more fun, be dramatic and build the anticipation to the "hole" at the end of the game.

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books

Teddy Bears, Teddy Bears - Winburn
Sleepy Me - McGee

Action Rhyme: Teddy Bear, Teddy Bear

Teddy bear, teddy bear, turn around,
Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch the ground.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, reach up high,
Teddy bear, teddy bear, touch one eye.
Teddy bear, teddy bear, pat your knees,
Teddy bear, teddy bear, sit down please.

Does your child have a teddy bear or stuffed animal to repeat this rhyme with at home?  What other actions can you think of to perform with teddy bear?

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books

Polar Bear Night - Thompson
Good Morning, Little Polar Bear - Votaw

Action Rhyme: Polar Bear, Polar Bear
Polar bear, polar bear,
Where have you been?
I've been to play with another friend.
Where did you go to?
We played a bear game two by two.
Take one step forward,
Take two steps back,
Turn all around, jump front, jump back!
This polar bear game is not hard to do,
Just grab a partner and you do it too!

Polar bears love snow.  What words can you use to describe it?  Cold, soft, white....?  Find other white things in your house.

1, 2, Go!  (For children 1-3 years and a caregiver)

Books

Over in Australia - Berkes
Kangaroo, Kangaroo, Where Are You? - Safarian
Boing - Bruel

Action Rhyme: Here We Go Jumping High!
Here we go jumping high!
Here we go jumping low!
Here we go jumping around,
That's how a kangaroo goes.
Here we go jumping fast!
Here we go jumping slow!
Here we go jumping everywhere,
That's how a kangaroo goes.

Before your toddler can jump, you might notice him shifting his weight from one foot to another.  Jumping requires strength and coordination.  Practice jumping like a kangaroo, practice jumping like a frog.  What other animals can jump?

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books

The Little Red Hen - Barton

A Hat For Minerva Louise - Stoeke
The Farm - Aubinais

Action Rhyme: Silly Hat Song (Tune: This Old Man)

On my head, I wear my hat.
It is such a silly hat,
That my hat will wiggle waggle to and fro,
Where else can my silly hat go?
(Repeat using foot, elbow, knee)

The word "hat" starts with the letter "h".  What sound does the letter make at the beginning of a word?  What other words can your child think of that start with this letter.

Family Jam (For families with young children)

Books

Frozen Noses - Carr
Lucky Pennies and Hot Chocolate  - Shields
Snow Day! - Laminack

Take Home Activity: Counting
Make hot cocoa with your child and count how many marshmallows you put on top.  As you eat them, practice more math skills.
