Storytime Programs - Fall II, 2015 - Week Three

Welcome to the third week of our storytime programs.  In addition to our weekly storytimes, there are numerous special events happening so be sure to check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information.  We hope that you'll be joining us.   Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
Here Are My Hands - Martin and Archambault
Hands Can - Hudson

Action Rhyme: Where's My Hand?
Where's my hand?  Where's my hand?
Here it is!  Here it is!
What a perfect pair, what a perfect pair,
Clap, clap, clap.  Clap, clap, clap.
(Arm - swing)

"Songs and rhymes about body parts allow children to begin to develop their sense of self and make associations between words and parts of the body."  Baby Storytime Magic by MacMillan and Kirker

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
Goodnight Moon - Brown
The Little Red House - presented as a prop story

Action Rhyme: Goodnight Me
Goodnight two ears,
Stop sniffling nose.
Stay quiet mouth,
And don't move toes.
Good night two hands,
Stop fiddling around.
Goodnight two eyes,
Time to shutdown.

Make reading part of your daily activity.  Bedtime is an excellent time to snuggle up close and enjoy some quiet time together.  Reading books and rhymes about slowing down and getting ready for bed helps reinforce this routine.

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Dinosaur Kisses - Stein
Dini Dinosaur - Beaumont

Action Rhyme: Dinosaurs
Dinosaurs lived long ago.
Some walked. (stomp feet)
Some swam. (pretend to swim)
Some flew, you know. (flap arms)
Some were big. (hold hands high)
Some were small. (hold hands low)
Some were gigantic, (stretch arms wide)
And VERY tall! (stretch arms high)

Preschoolers love dinosaurs!  Encourage their interest by giving them information about dinosaurs, and new words too. Remember, a young child's brain is wired to learn as much vocabulary as possible.

1, 2, Go!  (For children 1-3 years with caregiver)

Books
My Crayons Talk - Hubbard
Snappy Little Colors - A pop up book (not for circulation)

Action Rhyme: Five Sheep
Five white and fluffy sheep (hold up five fingers)
In the pasture fast asleep (pretend to sleep)
Their wool kept them cozy all night long (hug yourself)
Snore!  Snore! (make snoring sounds)
The farmer slipped away with one (hold up one finger)
And sheared the wool till he was done (clap)
Then there four white fluffy sheep (hold up four fingers)
Baa!  Baa!
(Continue to count down to zero)

This week's theme was the color yellow.  Go on a "yellow" hunt around your house or neighborhood!  Or, have a "yellow" day - wear something yellow, eat something yellow, write your name with a yellow crayon........

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
The Kissing Hand - Penn
Brave Little Raccoon - Wolf
May We Sleep Here Tonight? - Koide

Rhyme: I'm A Little Raccoon (Tune: I'm A Little Teapot)
I'm a little raccoon, prowling around,
I hunt for food without a sound. (tip toe around)
A mask on my face and a bushy tail, (use hands to imitate mask and tail)
Let's see if you can spot my trail!

Repeat the rhyme at home with your preschooler.  Does he remember the meaning of the word "trail"?  What about "bushy"?  Reading and talking with your child are ways of increasing your child's vocabulary and increasing his knowledge of the world around him.

Family Jam (For families with young children)

Books
A Perfectly Messed-Up Story - McDonnell
Purple: Seeing Purple All Around Us - Schuette

Rhyme: Purple Dinos (Tune: If You're Happy And You Know It)
Purple dinos like to sing, they'll do it now.
Purple dinos like to dance, and they know how.
Purple dinos spin around.
Purple dinos touch the ground.
Purple dinos know it's time to take a bow.

We read, sang, and talked about a lot of purple things this week in storytime.  Repeat this rhyme at home with your child and do all the actions too.  Children were even able to take their very own purple dinosaur puppet to make at home.  Dancing and rhyming is always more fun with a dinosaur!
