Storytime Programs - Fall I, 2015 Week Six

Welcome to the final week of storytimes for Fall I.  We hope you and your child have had fun and learned some new things too!  Below you will some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

The Early Learning Center will be under construction during the storytime break from October 1 - 19.  The room will be closed most of this time but there will be a temporary preschool area in the Youth Center near the fish tank.  Books will have limited availability during this time.

Don't forget to count the books read to your child during storytime on your 1000 Books Before Kindergarten sheets! If you haven't yet joined our reading program, ask at the Help Desk for more information.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
Good Night, I Love You - Church
Twinkle, Twinkle, Time For Bed - Rookie Toddler

Rhyme: Rock-a-Bye Baby
Rock-a-bye baby,
In the tree top.
When the wind blows,
The cradle will rock.
When the bough breaks,
The cradle will fall.
Down will come baby,
Cradle and all.

Children learn best when they feel safe and loved.  Cuddly rhymes like this reduce stress and help your child develop mental resilience.
Adapted from Baby Storytime Magic by MacMillan and Kirker

Books
A Nap in a Lap - Wilson
Tuck Me In - Hacochen

Are you sleeping?
Are you sleeping?
Little one, little one.
Morning bells are ringing,
Morning bells are ringing.
Ding!  Dong!  Ding!
Ding!  Dong!  Ding!

Sing songs and rhymes about your toddler's everyday activities.  This is one way of practicing and exploring new language.

Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star - Big Book

Zoom, zoom, zoom,
We're going to the moon.
Zoom, zoom, zoom,
We're going to the moon.
If you want to take a trip,
Climb aboard my rocket ship.
Zoom, zoom, zoom,
We're going to the moon.
5, 4, 3, 2, 1...Blast off!

Make this week's storytime theme come to life for your toddler by pointing out the moon, stars, and sun in the sky.  What words can be used to describe them?

1, 2, 3, Go! (For children 1, 2, and 3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Cha-Cha Chimps - Durango
YouTube Video Book - The Animal Boogie - Harter and Penner (Click on the link below to view this fun sing-a-long book again!)
Animal Boogie

Puppet Action Rhyme: Monkey See, Monkey Do
Monkey see, monkey do,
Little monkey in the zoo.
Monkey, monkey, in the tree,
Can you jump around like me?
(Swing your arms/Clap your hands/Nod your head/Sit down)

This is a fun rhyme to repeat at home together - you could use a stuffed animal if you'd like too.  Can you think of other actions to add?

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
The Tiger Who Came To Tea - Kerr
It's A Tiger! - LaRochelle
Cats Are Cats - Gorbachev

Rhyme: T-I-G-E-R (Tune: B-I-N-G-O)
There was a big cat that had some stripes,
And Tiger was his name-o
T-I-G-E-R, T-I-G-E-R, T-I-G-E-R,
And Tiger was his name-o.

Can your preschooler sing this song with you and spell TIGER out loud?  Next, can he write the letters in the correct order?  Show him the connection between the written word and the spoken word.  If your child shows interest, replace TIGER with another word and teach him how to spell the new word!
