Spring Session, Week 1

Welcome to the Spring 2014 Session of our Ready, Set Read! Blog, Week 1!  We have lots of things to share from our different programs for you to try with your little ones at home.  Make sure to also stop by our “Ready, Set, Read!” Station in the Early Learning Center in which you and your child can listen and read a story together and complete a fun activity!
Baby Rhyme Time!
This week we focused on we are having Spring fun with your little one.  We read This Little Baby Goes Out By Lynn Breeze  and What Can You Do in the Rain? By Anna Hines.
Here are some songs that we used in our program for you to use at home…

Rhyme: Raindrops Are Falling

Raindrops are falling.  Won’t you try and catch one?
Raindrops are falling.  Won’t you try and catch one?
Raindrops are falling.  Won’t you try and catch one?
Catch one if you can.

Rhyme: Wind (With Scarf)
Wind can be a gentle breeze,
Gentle breeze, gentle breeze,
Wind can be a gentle breeze in the spring.
Wind can help you fly a kite,
Fly a kite, fly a kite,
Wind can help you fly a kite in the spring.

To continue Spring fun at home, as the weather gets nicer go outdoors and have a “feeling” experience with your baby.  Use describing words on the wind, rain, warmth, the grass on underneath!

Wonderful Ones
This week we are having fun with our little ones!  Some books that we read this week are:  Who Says Woof? By John Butler and Wiggle! By Taro Gomi.

Here are some songs that we used in our program for you to use at home…

Rhyme: Flying Babies

(Tune: I'm a Little Teapot)
I'm a little baby, I fly high (raise baby)
Here is the ground and here is the sky
(Bring baby down and up)
Like a little bird of butterfly
I'm a baby and I fly high! (raise baby)

Rhyme: Wiggle, wiggle fingers

Wiggle, wiggle fingers, right up to the sky,
Way up high.
Wiggle, wiggle fingers,
Wave them all goodbye.
Wiggle, wiggle fingers,
Right into a ball.
Now throw them on your lap.
But do not let them fall.

Continue the fun at home by trying out this traditional Fingerplay!
Here We Go
Here we go up, up, up,
(raise hands high)
Here we go down, down, down.
(lower hands)
Here we go forward,
(take one step forward)
Here we go backward.
(take one step backward)
Here we go round, round, round.
(turn around once)

Terrific Twos!

This week is about The Zoo!  Here are some books to read to with your child that goes along with our theme: Hidden Hippo By Joan Gannij and Going to the Zoo By Tom Paxton

Here are some songs and rhymes we used in our program this week….

Rhyme: Zebras are running through the grass,
(tune of 10 Little Indians)
Monkeys swinging from the trees.
We are going to the zoo,
Join us if you please.
Snakes are crawling over the rocks,
Elephants stomping on the ground.
Parrots flying, lions roaring
Stop and look around.

Rhyme: (with fingerpuppets)
Oh I went to the zoo and what did I see?
I saw a great hairy lion looking at me.
He went Roar, roar, roar, roar
And that’s what he said to me.
(tall spotted giraffe munching, pretty striped zebra braying, friendly grey elephant squirt squishing.)

To extend our theme at home, sing the song We’re Going to the Zoo! Raffi has an excellent version of this song on his CD, Singable Songs for the Very Young.

1, 2, 3, Go!
This week we are talking about Spring! We read the following during our story time: Raindrop, Plop! by Lewison and Hooray For Spring! by Hubbell.

Rhyme: Ten Little Flowers (Tune: Ten Little Indians)
One little, two little, three little flowers
Four little, five little, six little flowers
Seven little, eight little, nine little flowers
Ten flowers in the spring.
Give them rain and lots of sunshine
Give them rain and lots of sunshine
Give them rain and lots of sunshine
So they’ll grow up tall

Rhyme: I’m A Little Kite (Tune: I’m A Little Teapot)
I’m a little kite up in the sky.
See me flying, oh, so high.
When the wind begins to blow and blow,
I twirl and swirl, just watch me go.

Prop & Flannelboard Story: Rainbow Stew
Take an apple, put it in the pot
Stir it, stir it, stir it a lot.
Take it out now.  What will it be?
The prettiest red you ever did see.
(Red – Apple/Yellow – Banana/Pink – Watermelon/Green – Pea Pod/Purple-Grapes/Orange-Carrot/Blue – Blueberry)

To extend our theme, on the next rainy day, count umbrellas you see as you are about town!  Talk about how they look using descriptive works with your preschooler!
