Storytime Programs - Spring 2016, Week Three

Welcome to the third week of spring storytime programs.  In addition to our weekly storytimes, there are numerous special events happening so be sure to check our Events Calendar http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information.  We hope that you'll be joining us.   Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
Lola at the Library by McQuinn
Book! by George

Bouncing Rhyme: At the Library
We do a lot of reading,
We do a lot of listening,
We do a lot of playing,
At the library.

Make up songs or rhymes about routines or activities with your baby. As he gets older, encourage him to do the same. Singing and chanting rhymes are ways of practicing and exploring language.

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
Mommy's Best Kisses by Anastas
Llama Llama Night-Night by Dewdney

Action Rhyme: Five in the Bed
There were five in the bed and the littlest one said, "Roll over, roll over,"
So they all rolled over and one fell out.
There were four in the the bed and the littlest one said, "Roll over, roll over,"
So they all rolled over and one fell out.
Repeat until you get down to one.
There was one in the bed and the little one said, "Good night!"

Reading with your toddler is a perfect activity to calm your toddler as you prepare for bedtime or naptime.  Your child will look forward to snuggling up with you as you read a book or two together.  If you discover a favorite book during this time, all the better!

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Hi, Harry! by Waddell
Melvin and the Boy by Castillo (shown as a flannel story)

Action Rhyme: The Turtle
This is my turtle (make a fist and extend thumb)
He lives in a shell (hide thumb)
He likes his home very well
He pokes his head out when he wants to eat (extend thumb)
And pulls it back in when he wants to sleep (hide thumb)

We learned some fun facts about turtles in storytime this week. Where do they live?  Are they fast or slow movers?  Talk with your toddler about them.

1, 2, Go!  (For children 1-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
I Love Bugs by Dodd
Creepy Crawly Calypso by Langham (shown as a YouTube video)

Action Rhyme: Roly-Poly Caterpillar
Roly-poly caterpillar (wiggle right pointer finger)
Into a corner crept (place right pointer finger in left cupped hand)
Spun himself a blanket (spin around)
Then for a long time slept. (place head on folded hands)
Roly-poly caterpillar (wiggle right pointer finger)
Wakening by and by (stretch right pointer finger)
Found himself with beautiful wings
Changed to a butterfly (flutter arms like wings)

Pretend you have wings and fly like a butterfly.  Can you think of other things that fly?  An owl, an airplane.....?

Five sheep as happy as can be.
Take one away, the rest of them stay.
Four sheep as happy as can be.
Take one away, the rest of them stay.
Repeat with three, two, one...
One sheep as happy as can be.
Let him stay, bring one to play.
Two sheep as happy as can be.
Let him stay, bring one to play.
Repeat with three, four, five...

This is a fun way to practice subtraction and then addition.  Use your fingers, stuffed animals, toy cars or whatever you want to make it more visual.

Family Jam (For families with young children)

Books
The Ear Book by Perkins (shown as a musical YouTube book)
Shhh! by Gorbachev
The Noisy Counting Book by Schade and Buller (shown as a YouTube book)

Action Rhyme: Loud and Quiet
Quietly, quietly, not a sound,
I'm listening and I'm listening,
As I look around.
No sounds as I nod,
No sounds as I clap,
No sounds as I tap my hands on my lap.
Loudly, loudly, stamp and clap,
Loudly, loudly, stamp and clap,
Loudly, loudly, stamp and clap,
All that noise, well fancy that!

Go on a listening walk in your neighborhood.  What sounds can you hear?  Birds tweeting, dogs barking, wind blowing, footsteps tapping.....?
