Weekly Storytimes - Fall I, 2015 Week Three

Welcome to the third week of  storytimes.  In addition to our weekly storytimes, there are numerous special events happening - check our Events Calendar at  http://gailbweb.gailborden.info/evanced/lib/eventcalendar.asp, give us a call, or stop by the desk in the Early Learning Center if you would like more information.  We hope that you'll join us and make a visit to the library part of  your year-round routine.   Below you will find some of the books, rhymes, and fingerplays we are presenting this week.

Baby Rhyme Time (For babies 0-11 months and a caregiver)

Books
Tickle Teddy - Ellwand
Tickle, Tickle - Oxenbury

Action Rhyme: There Was A Little Mouse
There was a little mouse (wiggle finger)
Who wanted to come in the house (make finger run up baby's leg)
Not here, not there (tickle various spots)
But there!  Squeak!  (Tickle under baby's chin)

Fun and silly rhymes like this one may seem meaningless, but your baby is absorbing vocabulary and the rhythm of speech each time you talk to him

Wonderful Ones (For babies 12-23 months and a caregiver)

Books
Say Hello Like This! - Murphy
Funny Face, Sunny Face - Symes

Action Rhyme: Clap Them So
Clap them, clap them
Clap them so
Clap them high
And clap them low
Clap them fast
And clap them slow
Clap them, clap them
Clap them so
(Wiggle/Roll/Pat)

Our books in storytime this week talk about a baby's daily routine.  As you go through the day with your baby, talk about what you are doing together.  What clothes do you dress him in?  What do you make for lunch?  After playtime, do you have to put toys away?  Babies need to hear your words!

Terrific Twos (For toddlers 2-3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Splish-Splash - Smee
Row, Row, Row Your Boat - Cabrera

Action Rhyme: Riding Around In My Little Red Boat
(Tune: Ten Little Indians)
Riding around in my little red boat
Riding around in my little red boat
Riding around in my little red boat
Zoom, zoom, zoom, zoom, splash!

Row, Row, Row Your Boat is a well-known song to many parents and caregivers.  Share some more familiar songs and also some new ones with your toddler when you check out more "singable" books or even CD's.  Singing helps children hear the smaller sounds in words.

1, 2, 3, Go! (For children 1, 2, and 3 years and a caregiver)

Books
Dogs - Gravett
Big & Small - Jeffries
Where's Spot? - Hill

Action Rhyme: My Little Puppy
My little puppy's name is Rags
He eats so much that this tummy sags
His ears flip-flop and his tail wig-wags
And when he walks his hips zig-zag
Flip-flop, wiggle-wag, zig-zag
Flip-flop, wiggle-wag, zig-zag!

One of the highlights of our storytime this week was parachute play!  The little ones were thrilled to bounce our big and little stuffed dogs up in the air.  This is an easy activity to repeat at home using a towel or blanket.  Talk about shaking the parachute fast and slow, up and down.  Shake big things, little things, heavy and light.  Play is an important way for your child to learn language.

StoryMix For 3 to 6 (For children 3-6 years without caregiver)

Books
Hiccupotamus - Smallman
Tiny Little Fly - Rosen
Kiss Kiss! - Wild

Action Rhyme: The Hippo Hop (Tune: Hokey Pokey)
You put your clean foot in
You pull your dirty foot out
You put your clean foot in
And you squish it all about
You do the Hippo Hop
And you hop down in the mud
That's how a hippo cools off!

Such appealing and colorful books!  Repeat The Hippo Hop at home with your preschooler and ask him to include other body parts.
