Story Mix from Three To Six: Pat-A-Cake

Story Mix from three to six has been focusing on Nursery Rhymes. Did you know that, based on early childhood literacy research, nursery rhymes are an extremely effective tool for helping kids gain the skills they need to get ready to read?  This week we heard the rhyme, Pat-A-Cake which gave us this great idea for imaginative play!

Find a real pot and spoon that you don’t mind your child playing with and have fun reciting this action rhyme:

Mix the batter, stir the batter
Shake some flour in.
Mix the batter, stir the batter
Pour it in a tin.
Sprinkle raisins on it
Pop it in to bake.
Open up the oven door
And out comes a cake.

Playing helps children put thoughts into words and think symbolically so that they understand that spoken words stand for real objects and experiences.
