Wonderful Ones: Autumn for Babies

At the library, you may have brought your youngest children to the Wonderful Ones program.  This very popular program is specifically designed for babies 9 - 23 months and offers 15 minutes of stories, singing, and fingerplays along with an additional 15 minutes of playtime.  From the time they are infants, children learn language and other important skills that will help them learn to read.

Starting off our second Fall session, we'll be sharing rhymes, songs and stories for babies to enjoy the autumn weather and explore the different characteristics of the season. You'll use gentle movements to learn about the space around them, such as, clapping hands to the rhythm, making leaf flying motions, and using your fingers to tap the raindrops.  Using songs, rhymes and books, you are helping to introduce new words and sounds to your child, which helps him or her develop a bigger vocabulary.

Autumn in the Air Rhyme
Autumn leaf in the air,
Autumn leaf in my hair,
Autumn leaf on my knee,
Autumn leaf floating free,
Autumn leaf on my nose.
Whoops!  There it goes!

If You’re Happy That it’s Cold Rhyme
If you’re happy that it’s cold, clap your hands.
If you’re happy that it’s cold, clap your hands.
It’s the time for mittens and hats,
Let’s not forget about that,
If you’re happy that it’s cold, clap your hands.
(Touch your toes, nod your head)

Drip-Drop Rhyme
The rain goes drip-drop, (Tap in rhythm)
The rain goes drip-drop.
Drip-drop,
How it does plop.
Drip-drop.

This week at Wonderful Ones, we'll be reading these books.

1, 2, 3 GO! Celebrate Autumn

The leaves at the Gail Borden Public Library are sure starting to fall!  Help your little one celebrate the autumn season with these rhyming songs, fingerplay games, and entertaining books.  Songs and rhymes are a natural way to learn about language.  Songs help children develop listening skills and also helps them hear different sounds in words, a key lesson in learning reading comprehension and decoding.

Leaves Are Falling Down
(Sung to the tune of "Farmer in the Dell")
The leaves are falling down,
The leaves are falling down,
Heigh-ho, it’s fall you know,
The leaves are falling down.

The leaves are turning brown,
The leaves are turning brown,
Heigh-ho, it’s fall you know,
The leaves are turning brown.

The leaves are falling down,
The leaves are falling down,
Heigh-ho, it’s fall you know,
The leaves are falling down.

The leaves are turning red,
The leaves are turning red,
Heigh-ho, it’s fall you know,
The leaves are turning red.

(Repeat the rhyme using different colors such as yellow and orange.)

Two Blackbirds Fingerplay Game:
(Using your fingers or hands, act out the motions of the birds)
There were two blackbirds,
Sitting on a hill,
One named Jack,
One named Jill.
Fly away, Jack!
Fly away, Jill!
Come back, Jack!
Come back, Jill!

Sing a Song of Sixpence Rhyme
Sing a song of sixpence,
A pocket full of rye;
Four-and-twenty blackbirds
Baked in a pie.
When the pie was opened,
The birds began to sing
Wasn’t that a dainty dish
To set before the king?
